Hours: 40 hours PW/Full - time

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To oversee the daily operations of the Straus Family Creamery preventative maintenance program, equipment repairs, and creamery improvements with significant focus on improving equipment reliability, increasing team productivity, minimizing labor and overhead costs, as well as minimizing milk, ingredient and packaging waste while assuring highest levels of safety, quality, sanitation and regulatory compliance. To maximize profitability and ensure achievement of all Company goals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:             

  • Ensure mechanical and electrical expertise is available to production and other departments to maintain production systems, utilities, buildings and grounds in a 24-hour 7-day per week creamery operation
  • Develop process flows and associated requirements for new designs, equipment, and products
  • Coordinates maintenance schedules for equipment and machinery
  • Collaborates with Operations management team to utilize equipment to improve employee safety, production quality, equipment reliability and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) utilizing Continuous Improvement techniques
  • Assist in managing the creamery maintenance budget and Capital Project planning process
  • Manage computerized maintenance management system to optimize asset utilization through scheduled preventative maintenance
  • Ensures Company policies and standards are followed and/or upheld in both capital project implementation as well as with regard to daily maintenance
  • Test newly installed machines and equipment to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications
  • Manage quality assurance processes and procedures related to maintenance and equipment
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Company equipment at both Marshall and Petaluma locations
  • In conjunction with Operations Training & Development Coordinator, ensure that robust and effective maintenance -related safety, security, and regulatory employee training programs are upheld for all new and current maintenance personnel
  • Ensure the continuous improvement, training, and development of the maintenance department leadership team
  • Remain current with latest and emerging industry regulations and codes relative to mechanical and electrical systems design and operation
  • Conduct/oversee maintenance team member performance evaluations and make recommendations for coaching, performance improvement, and performance evaluations        Follow all company safety rules, SOPs,  and processes as well as for assisting with the training and enforcement of these as they pertain to the maintenance team
  • Assist with the communication of companywide goals (in sustainability, efficiency, annual performance) to maintenance teams and manage resources to ensure that company goals goals are met or exceeded
  • Must comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and any/all established processes , whether established by their manager, by the company or by law as well as assist with the communication, training, and enforcement of these as they pertain to the maintenance team
  • Must work in a safe manner and comply with all health, safety, security and emergency requirements that are communicated to you, whether established by your manager, by the company or by law as well as for assisting with the training and enforcement of these as they pertain to the maintenance team
  • Must comply with all Company policies communicated to you through your Employee Manual, trainings, notice boards or other postings, or by a member of management as well as for assisting with the communication, training and enforcement of all policies as they pertain to the maintenance team
  • Must participate in weekly team meetings, biweekly huddles,  safety meetings and other Company meetings as requested as well as ensuring the assistance of all maintenance personnel
  • Effectively and consistently communicate companywide goals regarding safety, sustainability, efficiency, and performance to maintenance team
  • Must manage resources to ensure that sustainability goals are met or exceeded
  • Must maintain excellent attendance
  • Flexibility to work different shifts when required, to be on call after hours, and to work weekends to support operation of a 24/7 facility
  • Occasional travel required to other Straus locations to do miscellaneous maintenance, as needed
  • Other duties as requested

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • 10 or more years of maintenance experience, preferably with working knowledge of creamery equipment
  • 5 or more years of supervisory or leadership experience, preferably in a food manufacturing or dairy
  • Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), preferred
  • Current/valid Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and clean driving record, required. This position  travels between work sites, approximately 15%
  • Fluent bilingual Spanish and English (both written and verbal), required in order to work effectively with department team and cross-functional team members

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Understanding of purchasing requirements and experience working with national contracts PSM (Process Safety Management) and good understanding of process control is required
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems as well as gas systems, liquid propane, boilers and refrigeration, and PLC (Programmable Logic Controls)
  • Waste water and waste treatment knowledge and experience
  • Dairy and/or liquid processing & ammonia refrigeration experience, preferred
  • PSM (Process Safety Management) experience and good understanding of process control
  • Advanced mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Implementation or management of a CMMS program (Computerized Maintenance
  • Management System)
  • May utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) to develop alternative design

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to working in a manufacturing environment
  • Extended periods of standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and stooping, turning the head and torso, reaching, grasping, bending and flexing the arms, legs, wrists, hands, and fingers.  – Repetitive at times
  • The senses of being able to see, hear and have full power of speech are required
  • The ability to climb and balance is essential
  • Ability to work at high elevations (i.e., rooftops, tops of tanks)
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work around farm animals
  • Ability to withstand temperatures ranging from -10° to 100° Fahrenheit
  • Ability to withstand noise produced by manufacturing and warehouse machinery up to 90 decibels
