Maintenance Technician

POSITION:             Maintenance Technician (MNT) – Marshall
DEPARTMENT:     Maintenance (102)
SUPERVISOR:       Plant Engineering Manager  
FSLA:                     Non-exempt

JOB OBJECTIVE: To maintain all plant equipment and facilities.

SCOPE:   To complete preventive maintenance tasks and/or repairs on buildings, production equipment, material handling equipment, boiler, fresh water and waste water systems, septic systems, and company vehicles so as to ensure the execution of our operating procedures and to maximize profitability and achievement of Company goals.

  • Prepare and maintain production machines and supporting equipment running production efficiently
  • Test boiler and water softeners, verify blow-downs, and check safety cut-outs
  • Open and close boiler for annual inspection
  • Welding – stainless, sanitary, and steel
  • Assembling PVC, ABS, and copper piping
  • Troubleshoot plant equipment problems (electrical, mechanical and pneumatic)
  • Troubleshoot plant refrigeration equipment
  • Service plant lighting
  • Fill forklift propane bottles
  • Operate forklift and other rental equipment including but not limited to: scissor lift, boom lift, backhoe, concrete saw, etc.
  • Furnace, fresh air, air compressor, and fresh water filter replacement as scheduled
  • Calibrate temperature probes and chart recorders to maintain compliance with state regulations
  • Grounds keeping  (i.e., weed abatement, tree trimming)                                      
  • Must comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and any/all established processes , whether established by manager, by the company or by law as well as assist with the communication, training, and enforcement of these
  • Must work in a safe manner and comply with all health, safety, security and emergency requirements that are communicated, whether established by manager, by the company or by law
  • Must communicate any safety hazard to a member of management
  • Must comply with all Company policies communicated through your Employee Manual, trainings, notice boards or other postings, or by a member of management
  • Must participate in weekly team meetings, biweekly huddles,  safety meetings and other Company meetings as requested
  • Must ensure work is produced in the most sustainable manner
  • Must maintain excellent attendance and work ethic
  • Travel to other Straus locations and farm to do miscellaneous maintenance, as needed
  • Must have scheduling flexibility to work different shifts when required and to work weekends to support operation of a 24/7 facility
  • Other duties as required


  • Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma, preferred
  • TIG/stainless steel welding, MIG, and/or Arc welding, required
  • Electrical certification, required
  • PLC (Programmable Logic Controls) experience, preferred
  • HVAC certification, dairy and/or liquid processing & ammonia refrigeration experience, preferred
  • Waste water and waste water treatment knowledge, preferred
  • Must possess valid Driver’s License and good driving record

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems as well as gas systems, liquid propane, boilers and refrigeration, and PLC (Programmable Logic Controls)
  • Advanced electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Competent in assembling PVC and ABS piping
  • Competent in sweating copper piping
  • Basic Arc, MIG, and TIG welding skills
  • Competent in commercial electricity - 220v and above
  • Competent in industrial refrigeration. EPA certification preferred
  • Prior GMP and HAACP training
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry and related power tools
  • Must be able to comprehend basic math calculations and conversions
  • Prefer those with ability to communicate in basic English effectively, both written and oral
  • Spanish preferred but not required
  • Ability to perform with a high level of professionalism
  • Must be able to troubleshoot problems related to area of responsibility
  • Must be able to calmly respond to equipment or other problems and find solutions
  • Must be able to handle various maintenance issue simultaneously efficiently and using good judgment
  • Must be able to drive a forklift and/or other electrical or manual materials moving equipment
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to working in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to withstand intermittent periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and stooping, turning the head and torso, reaching, grasping, bending and flexing the arms, legs, wrists, hands, and fingers.  – Repetitive at times
  • The senses of being able to see, hear and have full power of speech are required
  • The ability to climb and balance is essential
  • Ability to work at high elevations (i.e., rooftops, tops of tanks)
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work around farm animals
  • Ability to withstand temperatures ranging from -10° to 100° Fahrenheit
  • Ability to work in cold, wet, humid environments and or high allergen environments
  • Ability to withstand noise produced by manufacturing and warehouse machinery up to 90 decibels
  • Ability to lift, hold and/or carry 55 pounds, unassisted
  • Ability to work on a computer and look at a computer screen for frequent periods of time
