The Mendoza Dairy is located on 1,200 acres at the Historic B Ranch on the Point Reyes Peninsula. They are the newest family-farm milk producer selling to Straus Family Creamery and the first dairy in the Point Reyes National Seashore to produce milk for Straus Family Creamery. Fourth-generation owner Jarrod Mendoza has a herd of 210 Holstein, Jersey and Jersey-Holstein crossbred milking cows. His fiancé Kayla Mossi has local dairying in her lineage and their daughter Layla is now the 5th generation on this dairy by the Pacific Ocean.
Jarrod was attending Chico State, majoring in criminal justice, when in 2009 his father Joey Mendoza reluctantly sold the dairy’s herd, vowing to return someday. Two years later Jarrod kept his father’s promise, revitalized the dairy with the purchase of an organic herd of 120 milking cows and quickly transitioned it into a certified organic dairy. Jarrod had been working part-time at the university’s organic dairy farm and saw the positive differences in the health and the temperament of the cows. Jarrod said, “My criminal justice studies taught me you can be proactive and prevent crime or be reactive and respond. Organic dairying is proactive, and that felt right.” Jarrod’s family never used pesticides on the land so the pastures were practically organic, but not certified. “When I talked with my Dad about my ideas, he commented that we were going back to doing things the way my great grandfather did them - he supported my plan.”
Working with Straus Family Creamery
Jarrod’s family had land adjacent to the Straus family in Marshall and said, “When I was a kid we used to drive by the Straus dairy and my Dad would say, ‘That’s where Albert Straus is doing that organic thing.’ I applied to Straus shortly after we were certified organic and three years later we are proud to have joined their family dairies. It is important to us to provide a local product coming out of the Point Reyes National Seashore and to have our milk be part of providing healthy products for our community.”
